November 12, Second Saturday Racewalk, unjudged. 2.8 miles. Nice weather but rain and snow predicted for the afternoon so we lucked out. About 40 degrees but calm so a bonus day. Times were slower but that's mainly the late season and colder day. Ann and Michelle had a nice battle for the first half of the race until Ann pulled away to win.

September 18, Long Beach, CA, Sri Chinmoy track meet 5K racewalk. Warm day by 9:45 am start. Field of 11 and I finished first in 29:57. This was the morning after attending a wedding in LA so only hoped to break 30 once felt how warm it was and barely made it. Winning the race was an unexpected bonus.
September 10, Second Saturday Racewalk, Unjudged. Hottest weekend of the year as summer finally arrived. About 70 and humid for our race so felt warm as we're not used to heat this year. Small turnout with travel and injuries. Michelle recovered well from broken toe and went out fast but we both slowed in the heat.

August 13 , Second Saturday Racewalk, unjudged. 2.8 miles. Nice calm day at just over 60 and sunny, again. Unusual day as several health issues among our walking group. Bob had a sore knee, Michelle was recovering from a broken toe so wore a boot on one foot, and Brian had some health problems recently so was just barely back to walking. Ann was the sharpest as she's been walking under 8:40 1 milers consistently at the Wednesday All-comers track meet put on by Club Northwest. Her speed let her pull away the final 100 meters for the win. Hope next month everyone is healthy again.

Racing roundup. AnnTuberg has reeled off a couple of 1 milers in mid 8:30's and Brian Peterman has been low 10 minute pace at Club Northwest All-Comers meets on Wednesday nights, at 7 pm. Bob Novak and I walked the Run with Pride 10K on June 19th for a workout in 61:30 range. There is a big hill in the middle that is really tough but same course last year and we were over a minute slower. Can't be we're getting older can it?
June 25, Portland Masters Classic, 5K racewalk Nice weather as 10AM start kept it cool. Mile racewalk was next day on June 26th.

June 4 Seattle Parks Masters Meet, West Seattle. A warmish morning with 11 AM start. Smaller field than last year. My Maui heat training paid off with my best race in over a year. May 7, Second Saturday Racewalk, Unjudged. Still cool in low 50's with a good breeze so we decided on a moderate the effort mainly. Bob is competing in Eugene next weekend. A welcome new addition to Seattle racewalking was Julia Sterman, a younger walker who moved here from NY where she was part of the High School walking program they have there. Julia is just starting back into walking and with nice technique she should progress quickly. Now if the weather would just cooperate and warm up a little.

March 12, Second Saturday Racewalk, Unjudged. Very wet and cool. Wettest day we have had in years. Brian pulled up at 1/2 mile as his hamstring tightened up. Ann had her shoelace loosen and had to stop to tie it. I had a bad case of Seattle crud (cold virus) and just timed the race and then did a clinic with three brave participants in the rain.

February 4, Second Saturday Racewalk, Unjudged. Nice calm but damp day at about 50 degrees. Had a new walker, Bill, a friend of Martin Rudow, and Brian phoned in his result from Thursday as had a conflict. Note to Brian, you are now #4 of our age 60 team. More incentive. Bob N. was elsewhere too so we didn't have to push as hard.

Oct. 17th Hour RW in Banks, OR. Report from Bev: Good weather. Preceded by a 30 min. walk with lots of participants. Accompanied by a RW clinic and judging clinic. Good news for me at least was surpassing the very soft old W70 record by 1000 meters. The bad news is that Louise Walters (who’s walking just wonderfully) surpassed it by much more! We’ll have to wait for the end-of-year postal results to see how the team of Chraminski, Peterman and Novak did in the M60-64 competition. Dora, always gracious, brought a bouquet of red roses to Marie Vermeer for the registration table. Judges: Ann Gerhardt, Fred Seewerker, Doug Vermeer, and Margaret Seewerker and Anne Whitaker who both walked the earlier 30 min. event. Erin Gray is Coach Bob Gray’s daughter, and looked REALLY good. Bob has been asking for an indoor event up here early in 2011.

Nice morning, mid-50's but felt warmer in the finally sunny day. For some reason most were slower than desired. Part was the crowds at the lake as the good weather brought out the crowds of dog walkers, coffee sippers, runners, and baby strollers. Everyone was a little slower than last month. April 25, Fitness for Vitality 10K, Myrtle Edwards Park, Seattle, unjudged.
A beautiful morning at high 40's temperature and calm along Seattle's waterfront park. Most of the course was on the slightly rolling path where the old Sri Chinmoy races were held although those were a 1 mile loop and here there was an out and back 5K course which the 10K racers did twice. Bob set a good pace and I followed as we did our fastest 10K's in several years, a good omen for the rest of the season, we hope.

April 3, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles.
Coldest and windiest day of the season - still only 37 degrees at 10:30 am - with strong gusts causing white caps on Green Lake. Looks like mild winter is turning into a cold spring. Bob and I were hoping to be near 26 flat but no way on a day like today.

March 28, 15K in Blaine, WA Report from Bob Novak.
The weather for the 15K was almost ideal, temp. in the 50s and very little wind. I did 1:32:07 and felt pretty good until the last 2 or 3 kilometers. The course was along the bay and flat until about the 7K mark and then went inland and up a hill, luckily not as steep as the one at Magnuson Park. We were up on a plateau for a bit, turned around just before 10K and then came back down. (The 30K people kept going past the turnaround. I have no idea where they ended up!) There was one more short, steep hill just before the finish but overall it was a pretty good course. Lots of aid stations, very little traffic and a nifty long-sleeve shirt made out of some very high-tech material.
March 27, Spring Break Track meet by Club Northwest. 3K racewalk.
Nice day and calm. Had two high school girls doing first racewalk and not quite legal but decent form for rookies. Lightly judged race so finishing was OK.

March 21, Magnuson Park Club Northwest Series
Nice day on first day of spring but the course was 50% gravel including a decent stepped hill you do twice on the 2.5K course. Not a bad running course but not very suitable for racewalking. Good workout is the best you can say about it.

March 13, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles.
Cool breeze after a stormy night, about 40 degrees at race time. Nutrition note: I stopped using sports drinks this year (all seem to have citric acid) before races due to some reflux issues, now mainly cured, and for 3 straight races had blood sugar issues where "bonked," last time the worst in Oregon last week where never recovered during the race. Had 20 ounces of gatorade before today's event and was fine. Shows how easily you can make mistakes that cost you on race day. What's the lesson? Find what works for you and stick with it

breakfast at Banks High School in support of the community wide fund raising
by and for the Banks Oregon Fire Department.
The race started at 10:00 AM with a mostly sunny sky, a temperature of 45 F
(7C), and no wind. Everyone agreed that it was perfect weather for a race.
Nathaniel Roberts, a 14 year old racewalker from Salem Oregon led the field
from the start to the finish with a time of 26:12.5. Also, Kelly Clark, a 21
year old junior at Southern Oregon University in Ashland Oregon, had an
excellent time of 28:49.9.

February 14th, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles.
Valentine's Day morning was nice to us as was 53 degrees and calm and not crowded at the lake. Rained all night and then again Sunday afternoon so we caught the good weather window. Even had three ladies show up at the clinic afterward to learn to racewalk. The day before they had a huge Valentine's Day 5K at the lake so parking and racing was not possible. We even had an eagle perched in a treetop to watch us race today. Of course, with the holiday a smaller turnout. We were all in holiday mode I guess as all were a little slower than last month.

Nicer day with 44 degrees at race time and sunny for warm down. Bob did his fastest January time in several years. Several fast times except Ann who did her first race at new age group. We're encouraging her to go to Sacramento for Nationals this year as she is at the bottom end of the age group.

December 12 , Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles.
One of our coldest mornings ever at 24 degrees and 2/3's of Green Lake was frozen over. Calm however and by 11 was 30 degrees and sunny. Bob graciously allowed for my recent recovery from the sprained ankle and walked with me. Rebecca was right behind us.

November 14 , Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles.
A cold day at about 35 degrees but calm. Usual suspects walked but I was only holding the timer as sprained my ankle two weeks ago in a "movie accident". Leg fell asleep from sitting too long and when I got up couldn't put weight on it and rolled the ankle. Luckily I can put weight on it and it's only walking that hurts so have been doing the elliptical machine while I ice it and it heals. Should be back to slow walking in a another week or so. Good thing it was this time of year when doesn't matter and indoor option is better than the rain outside. Would have been my first race at age 62. Ann arrived late so timed herself and nipped Bob on time as he was just shooting for 27 minute range out by himself. We're pretty informal here as you can see. It's the honor system.

October 18, 2009, Hour Walk, Pasadena, CA. A beautiful morning for the 7:00 am race at Cal Tech track. About 20 participants. Videotaping and viewing party afterwards - with food. A super event, the first of a series of three hour walks this winter. I was third overall and 2nd in the age group and happy to be over 10K again.

October 10, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. A beautiful although cool morning. Calm so good racing conditions. Bob is in Oregon doing the Astoria Columbia Crossing race this weekend. I was the only guy. Men, where are you? After the race, several of us road a 6 person Dutch bike. It's a circle where the peddlers sit facing hte middle and one person steers and has the brakes. Pretty fast but a little wide for the Green Lake path. Really pulls some G's when it corners so feels like a carnival ride. Maybe we could use one to carry several judges along a racewalk road course? No, don't want to give them any ideas.

September 19 , Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. A cooler day again at 57 degrees with rain before and after our race. Mental energy sapped by hard rain at 8 AM as we wondered if it was worth going out. Then we overdressed and felt too hot during the race. I had hand surgery, 25 stitches, Tuesday, so was happy to just be out there. Bob and I paced Ann and then she used her milers speed to pull away at the end.

July 4 , Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. A nice warm day at about 70 with humidity but no wind so good training for Wisconsin next week. I've been training in hot and humid NC past week visiting family and doing 1/2 mile repeats at about 4:20 so told Bob I was ready for crazy today and it worked. Hit first mile at 8:35 and did my fastest time since 2004 (8:51 pace) and pulled Bob to under 9 minute pace too. We're as peaked for nationals next week as possible and will see what happens.

March 14, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. The weather finally didn't cooperate as we had a cold, rainy, and windy day. I used to have a 2 of 3 rule and now in my older age more like the one of three rule. If it's cold, or windy, or rainy, I stay indoors. Used to take two to keep me inside.
Should have taken my own advice as I was in bed half of Friday with a head cold and as soon as I tried to go fast in those conditions, I hit the wall and just strolled it in. We had a clinic afterwards with three hardy souls. I went home to bed for a few hours afterwards. Bob did well as he likes cold weather but wind kept him a minute slow. Ann also did well. Rebecca was just going for half-marathon pace as she plans on doing Mercer Island race next weekend. Miriam is a returning walker just starting to train again.

February 14, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. Temperature at 37 but calm so not bad. Bob likes the cold so took off and pulled the rest of us along. He was over a minute faster than last month. Colin is visiting from Hawaii so I figured out the temperature was 45% of what he was used to back home. He was injured most of last year and is feeling better and making a comeback for 2009. Hoping to see him in Wisconsin this summer. No ladies raced today. Saving themselves on Valentine's Day?

Stan Chraminski, 61, 26:06
Richard Zerbe, 70, 30:43
Mike Sinnett, 60, 31:17, nice improvement over last month.
Diane Britzius, 61, 37:17, mainly a runner but has a sore hamstring that is OK walking.
Richard Zerbe has taken a break from racewalking and been mainly running this winter and has had good success. Here is a note from him. "I have won all three of the Winter Grand Prix races in my age group and each time has been an improvement. The events have all been either 3000 meters or 2 miles. The 3000 meters have had hills. My time for the last race 3000 meters was 16.11"
January 10 , Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. Temperature at 40 and calm so we again lucked out after snow and rain past few weeks. Decent times for first race of the year.
Bob Novak, 59, 26:48
Stan Chraminski, 61, 26:54
Ann Tuberg, 49, 28:58 * a late start due to parking being crowded
Rebecca Kettwig, 37,29:42
Mike Sinnett, 60, 33:37 New walker from last month's clinic who lives in Kingston
2008
December 13 , Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. Cool morning at 36 degrees but sun came out for an hour and it was calm so a decent day. Day before was cold and rainy and next day snow predicted with high of 28 so we lucked out. Bob and I both had colds so he stayed home but I hung around and did a clinic for two brave souls. Ann and I walked together and chatted so more of a social walk versus a race. It was her 49th birthday so didn't want to tire her out..... Richard Zerbe is mainly running now so came out and ran a good part of the course. He just turned 70 so wants a running comeback.

November 1 , Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. Temperature in 50's and calm so a decent day for November. Same folks raced as month before. I was at two and a half weeks after my arthroscopic knee surgery but did OK and only a little out of shape from less training versus any effect from the surgery. That arthroscopic is minimally invasive and heals quickly. Bob was content to pace me and Rebecca followed. My last race at age 60 as turned 61 on the 3rd of November.

October 11 , Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. Sunny after a foggy start and was 37 degrees before the fog started burning away. I never warm up right on cold days so had a bad start but Bob graciously hung around and we finished a little better. Ann got stuck behind an accident on I-5 so missed the start but came around clockwise to cheer us on and walk in with Rebecca.

September 13 , Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. Sunny and nice. Bob tweaked his knee and I'm in shutdown mode as will have arthroscopic surgery on knee Oct. 15th so mentally my season is over. That's our excuse for slow times. Ann and Rebecca, however, were fast. Ann was back from the Oregon Portland to Coast team and Rebecca did a marathon this summer and then took time off to help her mother move to Virginia. She drove cross country three times!

July 4, Yankee Doodle Dash, Everett. 60's and cloudy so not bad conditions. As usual the splits were all screwed up as had between 8:15 and 10:15 for some of the mile marks but overall 10K seemed fairly accurate. 5K has been been notoriously long course. Richard and I both finished 2nd in our age groups despite competing against runners. Pays to be old...(Two weeks ago I was only person over 60 in Run with Pride 10K at Seward Park. Did 59:42. Shows demographics of gay community. Not many over 60 left alive it looks like, sadly, or at least not competing. I was one of few "straights" participating.)

located about 100 miles (160 KM) north of the USA Track and Field
Olympic Trials that are being held in Eugene Oregon from June 27 to
July 6, 2008 with the 20 KM USA Olympic Trials held in Eugene on
July 5 and July 6. (Compliments of George Opshal)
The 5000 racewalk in the Portland Masters Classic was held on the
excellent 400 meter rimmed track at Mt. Hood Community College. The
weather at the 5:30 PM (that is correct time of 5:30 in the
afternoon) start time was a temperature of 96 F (36C) and a very
blue hot sunny sky with moderate of 50% humidity. The participants,

Report from Gordon Hartwig. I was in Indianapolis for continuing education and race walked the 2008 OneAmerica 500 Festival MiniMarathon on May 3. There were 35,000 registrants...the largest half marathon in the US. A very flat course that takes a lap at the Brick Yard. I felt like one of the Indy cars on the track. I met a few other race walkers along the way. Indianapolis actually has a bigger group than we have in Seattle. My time was 2:27:55, about 2 minutes faster than my Mercer Island Half.
May 10, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. Cool day, 48 degrees with breeze and threat of rain. Small turnout and slow times. We decided it was more mental than physical after the nice warm day we had last month. Back in pants and jackets so discouraging. Backlund's visiting from Oregon to fill in our field as locals didn't make it.

April 26, 2008, racewalkers gathered for the 2008 USA
Track and Field Regional Masters Championship and Pacific Northwest
Track and Field Association Championship. The 10000 meter racewalk
drew competitors from Salem Oregon to Vancouver BC Canada. In
addition to the 10000 meter masters racewalk, there were held a
10000 meter open, 5000 meter and 3000 meter racewalks.
As usual, all the racewalkers, spectators, judges, and volunteers
celebrated the birthday of Bev LaVeck McCall who is the race
director as well as one of the 10000 meter racewalk competitors.
Bev is a great race director as well as a great competitor and what
makes Bev a very special person is that Bev brings the food and cake
for everyone to share at the event.
The sky was absolutely clear blue without a cloud to be seen. The
temperature on the track at the 10:00 AM start time for the 10000
meter racewalk was 64 F (18C) with a very light swirling breeze.
The judges for all the racewalks were:
Darlene Hickman, Chief
William Hickman
Jim Bean
Jan Kavadas
Char Engelhardt
The timer was Carole Langenbach.

February 9, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. This sounds familiar. Same 41 degrees and slight drizzle at the start as last month but a pretty stiff breeze blowing from the south so we were happy to get close to times of last month. Several folks did somewhat faster so I suspect they have been actually training. Exact same people as last month participated and finished in same order so don't know what that means. Consistency I guess.

December 8 and 15, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. A few missed the news that we slipped the second Saturday race to third due my 25th anniversary trip to Mexico so we had a split race. The earlier weekend had the better weather as 15th it was cold and windy with intermittent rain but luckily the rain held off during the race. 15th racers deferred to the weather and just did a social workout as Bob was a few minutes slower than prior month and kept me company.

August 11, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. Nice warm morning again with minimal breeze. PS. I'm not in the results as tweaked a hamstring on Tuesday and the leg wrap only held off the pain for about 2 miles so I dnf'd at 2.5. Back to the ice packs for a few days. That's the problem with training. If you do it you risk injury, if you don't, you're slow. Finding the in-between is the art to the science.

September 16, Fairhaven Runners 15K race, Bellingham, WA. Advertised as a flat fast course. Wondered where that came from as we lined up at the start and looked up at the two block hill we were ready to start up. Hit the crest and then rolling road for next two miles. Then went downhill to flatter land but had numerous twists and turns and changes of surface, from concrete, to wooden slats, to gravel. At 7 miles Bob and I were still on pace to break 1.5 hours. Then we went uphill to halfway up the crest and ran into 2 miles of gravel road. I was feeling pretty good and tried to chase Bob down but could only do 10 flat miles. Wow. Disappointing for the effort. Then at mile 9 marker we had a 100 yard steep bridge up from the waterfront again and finished on the gravel. I don't think this would be a fast running course and for racewalking it was terrible. It's going on my list of never do again race courses.

USATF National Masters T&F Meet, Charlotte,NC, August 3-7. I've included all the results from their site and highlighted those with NW connections. Friday's 5K took place on a record setting heat day where it reached 98 and muggy. Someone said temp was 92 and radiant heat on track at Men's 30-59 race at 9:10 am was 119. Enough said.
Sunday's 10K was on a hilly course although temperature was only 76 or so. My body clock at 7 am was still on 4 am Seattle time but I had a good race effortwise. Tommy Aunan takes the prize for coming closest to his Seattle times in those conditions. He medalled as well as Bart Kale.

June 3rd and May 28, walked a 10 K in a running road race in Los Angeles, very hot, and a day after ran in pants and jacket and gloves in Seattle. Was high 70's but felt like 100. 60:54 (Personal worst 10K) although did match my race number, 154, for one hour, 54 seconds. Next, June 3rd did the California State Senior Games 5K racewalk at Cal Tech in Pasadena. Was 81 degrees as pulled into the parking lot at 8:15 am. Was 91 as left at 10 am so race temp at 9 was about 85 and track was way hotter. Finished 2nd to Larry Walker in 28:54. Was happy to finish only 26 seconds slower than last month in cool Oregon. Now I have a feel for what Charlotte will be like in August only with humidity, or like my mom says, humility. Yes, it will probably bring some of that too.

May 7, 2006. The Month of May 5K Racewalk was held on Sunday morning May 7, 2006. The event was held at Banks Oregon which is nestled next to the eastern foot hills of the Coastal Mountains that protect the valley from Pacific Ocean winter storms. The 5000 meter racewalk was held on the Banks High School 400 meter track. The well constructed asphalt track seems to never have puddles or standing water when it is raining.
The weather at the 10:00 AM start time for the race was 45 F (7 C) under a cloudy sky with clouds just covering the tops of the Coastal Mountains and with a very strong wind coming toward the participants on the finishing straight away.

Bob and a returning walker, Karl Johansen, did the double loop in nice times. I started out planning on both but was dehydrated and at 1/2 mile had to stop as got lightheaded. Strolled to the mile mark and then recovered and finished at good pace but skipped the second lap. Accidentally had real coffee on Thursday night so had only 5 hours sleep and kept urinating all night and didn't make up for the water loss on Friday. Shows how finely tuned the body is. Or is it old age?

The Seattle Masters Classic 5000 meter racewalk was held on Saturday
July 16, 2005. The racewalk was held on the West Seattle Stadium 400
meter track in West Seattle WA. This race saw the return from injuries
to competitive racing for three Seattle area racewalkers. Stan
Chraminski returned after 10 months and Dick Zerbe after 4 months. Ann
Tuberg returned with the best story describing the removal 4 months ago
of a metal screw from the small toe on her right foot with a hex wrench
and all the sounds that occurred while the metal screw was being
removed.
The weather conditions at the 9:30 AM start were overcast, humid,
temperature of 68F (20C), and a wind coming toward the participants on
the finishing straight away. At the start Ann Tuberg led competitors
for the initial lap with a very fast time. During the second lap,
Tommy Aunan moved into the lead and maintained the lead for the
remainder of the race. Bev LaVeck won the age graded performance. The

May 14th, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. A nice morning with some wind but good conditions and even a bit warm when the sun came out. Bob Novak was under the weather so skipped this and his projected race in Riverside, Cal. We had a good turnout as several walkers from last month's clinic did their first racewalk race. Congratulations Del, Bob, and Kelly. Also joining us was Gordon who has been walking for a while but just decided to hook up with our group. My sore foot is responding to new orthotics so I'm hoping to train pain free soon. Today's race was faster than I expected and it's amazing what happens when you can focus on walking versus pain... Ann also had a cold today and Joslyn suffered from lack of training syndrome.

Racewalk, April 16, 2005
The USATF Northwest Masters Regional and Pacific NW Association Open
10KM Racewalk was held on April 16, 2005. The racewalk was held at
West Seattle WA. The race is held a few days before or a few days
after Bev LaVeck's birthday. This year the race was held a few days
before Bev's birthday. This racewalk is also known as the Bev LaVeck
Birthday Party 10KM Racewalk. After the race, Bev also provides
lunch and cake for judges, volunteers, participants, spectators and
everyone else.
The race was held at the West Seattle Stadium on an excellent 400
meter track. This year was the first time in many years that there
was rain during the race. The weather at the 10:00 AM start time was
very cloudy, raining, windy and cold. The temperature at the start
time was 43 F (6 C). Although the competitors wore only shorts and a
shirt, the competitors quickly warmed up. However, the judges,
volunteers and spectators were the people that really suffered during
the race.
Jarad Swehosky led from the start to finish while Bob Novak and Tommy
Aunan had a great race for second. The finishers and their times are:
Women:
1) Bev LaVeck, 68, Mazama WA, 1:06:36.90

Bart went past Bob and me about mile 2 but his form was ragged as he emphasized speed over form to get some work in before the Indoors in Idaho. He graciously declined to take the victory after I unofficially dq'd him and was glad to know what to work on before he gets into judged races. Had four ladies attend the clinic, several of them tri-athletes looking for an alternative to running.

Bonnie, 40's, 34:13, another new walker who recently completed the Seattle Marathon walking.
What's with all the new walkers doing marathons and us old hands having trouble gearing up for even a half? What do they know we don't or vice versa? Probably makes a difference if we consider it a race at all out speed versus finishing and actually enjoying the experience. I know I've had a sore foot for the past year limiting my mileage somewhat but it's more laziness and lack of desire than other drawbacks. Ah, nice to have youth (it's all relative in our mainly masters sport) and enthusiasm. Maybe the enthusiasm is a good goal for the New Year.

The One Hour Postal Racewalk was held in Portland Oregon on Sunday September 12, 2004. The one hour
racewalk was held on the 400 meter track at Jefferson High School in Portland. A portion of the entry fee

the event - the Inner City Steppers and the River City Track Club - will divide the proceeds raised.
The weather at the 9:30 AM start time was partly cloudy sky, a light swirling breeze, moderate
humidity, and a temperature of 68 F (20 C). Twenty minutes into the race, the sky cleared. Please note
that there was no snow this year. The finishers and their distances were:

July 10, 2004, Second Saturday Race (SSR), 2.8 miles unjudged. A nice cool day for July, 60 degrees, with only a slight breeze. We did have to contend with the milk carton derby at the south end of the lake and it cost us a few seconds of dodging and weaving. I started off too fast but then the rest chased me and got fast times. Guess we need to hire a rabbit.Bob and I are about right on pace for 27 flat 5K so hope we can break that at the 5K on the track in two weeks. I'm healthy to run again so will try and do the 5K run after the racewalk there. Hope they have two divisions so I have the break in between, not like last time where there was only 10 minutes to recover.
Stan Chraminski, 56, 24:25
Bob Novak, 55, 24:27
Bart Kale, 48, 25:00 (Bart mentioned I kept him the same age on the results for the past two years. Isn't racewalking wonderful. You never age.)

May 8, 2004, Second Saturday Race (SSR), 2.8 miles unjudged. A nice day at the lake with a perfect temperature - cool but warm enough to stay loose. Most walked their PR for the year. The good competition helped too as Bob and I pushed each other well to a tie and there were several other close finishes. We had two Bellingham rw's attend as Doug Ermini and Kathy Henley attended their first SSR. Also, Phoebe, Emily's 10 year old sister, did part of the course to prep for a later 1500 meter race.

director and she has her birthday close to the race day, this event
is fondly referred to as the Bev LaVeck Birthday 10 KM Racewalk

After the race, Bev LaVeck continued her birthday celebration which
was two days earlier by providing food and cake for the participants
and volunteers.
Richard Zerbe took a trip to Arizona in February and shares these results. I did a 1 minute 46 second racewalk quarter in AZ and was told it was a record though I don't know exactly what kind. I won my age group and was second by only 3/10's of a second to a 53 year old. The conditions were very bad, raining, cold (45 degrees) and windy. I went all out in the 400 so had little left for the 1500 racewalk - as you know endurance is not my strong point. I did about 9 min and 30 seconds which was also good enough for a win. The timers didn't work and the judging was loose so I can't say if I was completely legal or not. (Wow, that's a fast 1/4).
April 10th, 2004, Second Saturday Race (SSR), 2.8 miles unjudged. Nice day but almost a little too warm. No one seemed to do a fast time. Had several newcomers. Welcome to Emily and Jesse on their first SSR race. Bob was under the weather so with no one to push me, I was slower then last month, not a good trend. Maybe it was the 6:31 pace I ran around the lake course on Tuesday? Does it take more than 3 days to recover? Darn this old age is getting to be hell. Gregg had his knee injured when a skier ran into him on the slopes and had surgery so it will be the summer until we see him out again. Get well quick Gregg.
Stan Chraminski, 56, 25:07, (8:59 pace)
Bart Kale, 47, 26:29, (9:28 pace) Lots of racing so took it easy.
Bob Novak, 54, 17:04, (9:40 pace). Suffering from a cold so took it easy.
Joslyn Slaughter, 45, 27:38, (9:52 pace)
Richard Zerbe, 65, 29:10, (10:25 pace)
Ann Tuberg, 44, 29:19, (10:28 pace) Recovering well from foot surgery but still some pain.
Emily Sinclair, 15, 34:40, (12:23 pace) Starting to train for Junior competition. Nice smooth form. Great to have a young walker in the group.
Jesse Roper, 32, 34:40, (12:23 pace) Just learned to racewalk the month before through our clinic and looking good already.

January 10, 2004 Second Saturday Race (SSR), 2.8 miles unjudged.
A nice warmer morning after the cold and snow of the past week. With the poor weather recently no one was really race fit except Bart who has been doing running races. Most took it as a good workout. Ann is having toe surgery in two weeks to remove some bone spurs. We hope to see her back about when the weather improves. Rachel was under the weather today but hung in there well.

September 13, SSR at Green Lake. Unjudged. 2.8 miles. Nice day, in the 60's with little wind. Several seasonal bests today. We welcomed Tammie Corley, a former Washington resident who lived in Florida for 17 years and is now back home. She looks like a fast new addition to our walking group.

I (Stan C.) racewalked the Super Jock n' Jill half-marathon Sept. 1st in 2:04:45 (9:31 pace). It was a fair course on a warm morning although the middle section went up and down several times through the UW Bothell campus. The last 3 miles were flat along the river trail as were the first 5-6 miles. They also have a 4 mile race. There used to be a racewalk division in this race however our numbers have dwindled and I was the only racewalker in the run although Simon walked the race in the walk division. Unofficial reports have Steve Frederickson passing him at about 11 miles. Steve went on to finish in 2:14 so Simon was probably in the 2:15 range.
National Masters Track and Field Championships, Eugene, Oregon, August 7-10.
The weather in Eugene was cooler than expected, making for some good racing. The 5Ks were held on the Hayward Field track on Friday morning with 6 separate races by age groups. Bev was first out of the blocks at 8 am and smoked the field in the women's 65-89 race. She took the lead and gradually pulled away for the win, setting an age 67 record in te process.
Bob Novak and I were in the 10:15 race, men's 50-59. One side of the track was still in the shade so conditions were good. We walked our best 5Ks of the year which held up for 4th place for both of us in our age groups.
Bart Kale raced last at 11:40 am in the men's 30-49 group. He held on for 5th in a very competitive race but gained some notoriety when he stubbed his toe and took a header about 10 feet short of the finish line. He got up and did the last few steps to finish to the crowd's applause and his own embarassment.
In the 10K on the road on Sunday, only Bob and I from the Pacers competed. The women's race was at 8 am and the men's at 10:30. The course was a 1K loop back and forth in front of Hayward field. There was a fast start but Bob and I paced it well and passed quite a few walkers as I finished 4th (again) and Bob was 5th this time.
